In honor of Hispanic Heritage Month, CMS hosted a special program on "MedEdPORTAL and Latinx Health Research" featuring Pilar Ortega, MD, MGM, clinical associate professor of emergency medicine and medical education at the University of Illinois Chicago; Débora H. Silva, MD, FAAP, MEd, professor of pediatric hospital medicine at the University of Puerto Rico School of Medicine; and Hannah Turner, MPH, senior staff editor at MedEdPORTAL. Ms. Turner discussed educational scholarship and how medical educators can turn their teaching and educational innovations into publishable scholarship, while Dr. Silva and Dr. Ortega shared their authorship experiences.
Dr. Silva and Dr. Ortega also introduced MedEdPORTAL's new collection focused on Language-Appropriate Health Care and Medical Language Education. They are the co-editors of this collection, which focuses on manuscripts and curricular materials addressing one of the following aims:
Johnathan JeVon White, PhD, gave a presentation to Chicago Medical School/Rosalind Franklin University titled "The Thirst: Juneteenth and the Existential Quest for Black Freedom." This guest lecture was sponsored by the CMS Office of Excellence in Diversity and Inclusion.
Dr. White received his B.A. in Political Science from Clark Atlanta University. At the University of Pittsburgh, he earned an M.A. in History with an emphasis in African-American History and Black Literature. He is currently an Assistant Teaching Professor of U.S. and African American Studies at Penn State Greater Allegheny. He is Co-Director of the Stewart and Jones Scholar-Leadership Program, and chair of the campus Anti-Racist and Social Justice committee.
The Office of Excellence in Diversity and Inclusion at Chicago Medical School hosted this interactive career workshop to help medical students build communication and interview skills. Participants examined effective delivery skills in the virtual setting, making a positive first impression, articulating thoughts and ideas with confidence, and managing nerves.
The workshop was led by Marsheila DeVan, MBA, an Independent Consultant and Communication Specialist with over twenty-five years of training experience. She is the Co-founder of Elite Communications and her expertise includes work within the university systems as well as the pharmaceutical and medical industries.
The CMS Office of Excellence in Diversity and Inclusion hosted this financial planning session for Chicago Medical School students. The speaker was Aleatha Wilson, CIA, a financial advisor and strategist with a comprehensive financial planning practice, Wilson Financial, located in downtown Chicago with Northwestern Mutual. Ms. Wilson discussed topics including student loan and credit card debt, offensive and defensive planning strategies, the financial planning checklist, fiduciary vs. non-fiduciary advisors, and what makes physicians unique in financial planning.
This virtual event, held on Saturday, April 20 via Zoom, was a celebration of the UiM (underrepresented in medicine) members of the Chicago Medical School Class of 2021. The M4s celebrated their recent matches and looked forward to the start of their residencies.
CMS alumna Monica Branch, MD '17, was the guest speaker. Dr. Branch is a Chief Resident (PGY-4) in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&R) at Schwab Rehabilitation/University of Chicago Hospital and Care Network residency program.
