Amanda M. Simanek, PhD, MPH

Amanda M. Simanek, PhD, MPH
Director, Michael Reese Foundation Center for Health Equity Research; Associate Professor, Epidemiology

Dr. Amanda Simanek received her MPH in International Health Epidemiology and PhD in Epidemiologic Science from University of Michigan School of Public Health, where she trained as a social epidemiologist and then served as a member of the research faculty in the Center for Social Epidemiology and Population Health. Prior to joining Â鶹ӰÒô, she was a faculty member in the Joseph J. Zilber School of Public Health at University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, helping to build new MPH and PhD programs in Epidemiology.

Dr. Simanek's research focuses on understanding biologic pathways by which social inequities in health develop across the lifecourse and are perpetuated across generations, assessing best practices in science communication and infodemic management, identifying drivers of race/ethnic inequities in access to healthcare, and understanding ways to better address social needs in the context of healthcare delivery.

The Michael Reese Foundation Center for Health Equity Research, of which she is Founding Director, aims to foster health equity-focused research collaborations that are responsive to community needs, address socio-structural determinants of health and involve implementation of interventions aimed at improving health equity in Lake County, IL. Ongoing Center projects include assessing the role of area-level factors (i.e., environmental pollutants, spatial access to healthcare) in shaping race/ethnic and socioeconomic inequities in health across geographic regions of Lake County, IL, understanding the role of socioeconomic factors (cost and transportation) versus those related to interpersonal/institutional racism (i.e., trust, disrespect, quality of care) in explaining race/ethnic inequities in self-reported ease of access to various types of healthcare, and assessing how to better address food insecurity as an integral part of diabetes-related healthcare.
