Dr. Flanagan is an associate professor of Podiatric Medicine and Neuroscience in the Scholl College of Podiatric Medicine and School of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies. He works in the Center for Lower Extremity Ambulatory Research as Director of the Human Performance Laboratory. Dr. Flanagan’s background includes training in brain stimulation, imaging, neuroendocrinology, and stress physiology. His overall research interests emphasize neurobiological aspects of human health, performance, and disease. Dr. Flanagan’s laboratory uses a combination of advanced neuroimaging, perturbational, biochemical, physiological, and behavioral techniques to better understand and improve brain-body interactions in humans in vivo. Distinguishing features of Dr. Flanagan’s highly integrative and collaborative research program include:
Recent federally funded work includes the use of non-invasive brain stimulation to enhance physical and cognitive performance, mechanisms of use- and pathology-dependent neuroplasticity, and improvement of non-invasive brain stimulation techniques. Dr. Flanagan’s research projects are/have been supported by the Department of Defense, National Institutes of Health, and National Aeronautics and Space Administration. Dr. Flanagan is a member of the Society for Neuroscience, American Physiological Society, National Center for Neuromodulation for Rehabilitation, and American College of Sports Medicine.
