EXPLORING EVOLUTIONARY IMMUNOGENOMICS: LESSONS FROM OUR ANCESTORS AND PAST PANDEMICS

Dr. Luis Barreiro earned a BS in Biotechnology in 2003 Lusofona University in Portugal and a PhD in Human Genetics in 2008 from Paris Diderot University in France (AKA Paris 7). Following postdoctoral work at the Department of Human Genetics at the University of Chicago, he established his laboratory at the University of Montréal. In 2018 he joined the faculty of the University of Chicago where currently he is a Professor of Genetic Medicine. His research focus is on the intersection between evolution and functional genomics of the immune response. He is also the Chair of the Genetics, Genomics and Systems Biology Graduate program. Dr. Barreiro has received consistent NIH funding and published over 130 scientific works. Aside from Dr. Barreiro’s extensive research, he received a 2016 Young Investigator Award from the Canadian Pediatric Society and was selected by the journal Cell as one of the “40 under 40” investigators in 2014.
