Human Performance Laboratory

The Scholl Human Performance Lab is a state of the art facility for the quantitative and qualitative analysis of human physical activity. As a branch of Scholl’s Center for Lower Extremity Ambulatory Research (CLEAR), the lab has a particular interest in issues pertaining to complications of diabetes within the lower limb. Some of these interests include wound prevention and healing, fall prevention, objective assessment of corrective surgeries, and safely improving physical activity levels in individuals at risk of diabetic foot ulceration. In addition to the work done pertaining to diabetic complications, additional focuses of work include: reducing and preventing athletic injuries, improving physical activity performance, and evaluating the impact of medical interventions upon physical activity.

Instrumentation in the lab allows for kinematic analyses, or spatial and temporal measurements of movement such as linear/angular displacements of body segments and associated velocities/accelerations. The lab is also equipped to investigate the kinetics, or forces, associated with movement. Both the forces necessary to generate movement and the resultant reactant forces applied to the body as a result of movement are of interest.
